The Government’s vision for work experience.

Starting in September 2026 all schools will be expected to build on their existing Work-related and Careers learning by meeting the expectations laid out by the Government. Those expectations include:

• An ambition to deliver two weeks of work experience for every young person – with a focus on multiple, targeted and variable workplace experiences, totalling 10 days by the end of Year 11
• To expect work experience to be pivotal in improving work readiness and employability
• Experiences that are aspirational and inspirational, employer-led, first-hand and active (with two-way employer-pupil interaction).

A programme of modern work experience should:

• Provide targeted support for pupils
• Include experiences that are employer-led in their design
• Start early, allowing access to multiple different industries and occupations
• Be underpinned by learning outcomes and ensure a progressive approach.

Here at ‘The Hayling College’, the P.S.H.C.E curriculum has strands related to work and careers woven into the schemes of work, but in every subject staff spend time talking to pupils and demonstrating how subject-specific knowledge and skills help to prepare them for the world of work. National Careers Week, Green Careers Week and National Apprenticeship Week also help raise awareness for our young people. We have supplemented our work this academic year with inspirational talks from ex-pupils who have kindly given up their time to come back to their school. Some of our Support staff have also spoken about their work lives before Hayling. We were very excited to run a Careers Fair in February with a variety of employers and colleagues from local colleges for Years 9, 10 and 11.

Green Career Week 2025

2 – 7 November 2025 was Green Careers Week where students had an opportunity to look at and discuss the sectors that make a job a ‘green’ one.  For more information on Green Careers visit the website.

Careers Provider access policy

Introduction

This policy sets out the College’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to students at the College for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the legal obligations of the College under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

Student Entitlement

All students in Years 7-11 are entitled:

• To find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeship opportunities, as parent of careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point
• To hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer including technical education and apprenticeships, through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events
• To understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

Management of provider access requests

Procedure

A provider wishing to request access should contact Ms Helen Cox, Assistant Headteacher. Email: admin@hayling.hants.sch.uk

Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature with Reception for the attention of Helen Cox, Assistant Headteacher, for display in the college.

Opportunities for access

A number of events, integrated into the College’s Careers programme, will offer providers an opportunity to come into College to speak to students, and/or their parents/carers.

Premises and facilities

The College will make the Main Hall, classrooms or private meeting rooms available to discussions between the provider and students, as appropriate to the activity.  The College will also make available AV and other specialist equipment to support provider presentations.  This will all be discussed and agreed in advance of the visit.

We are always happy to hear from industry professionals that would like to inspire the next generation in your specific subject area.
