At The Hayling College we firmly believe that teaching pupils to choose and read books independently for enjoyment, challenge and interest is viral. Therefore we send parents regular information and review on both fiction and non fiction reading materials which we think their child will enjoy. Our Reading Newsletters are available at the bottom of this page.

In addition to this at Parents’ evenings the English department share age appropriate recommended reading lists which may inspire pupils.

The Hayling College subscribes to Hampshire Library Services and has a well stocked, diverse library for our students to access. Our library has recently been refurbished with breakout areas for students to read and study in a nice welcoming environment.

In addition to this, we have our online library SORA which contains 1,000s of eBooks, audiobooks and magazines that our staff and students can enjoy anytime they have internet access.

We also hold a yearly, week long Literary Festival every September. We know that meeting a real live author can increase children’s interest in books, help them understand how books are produced and boost the confidence of any aspiring writers. Previous Literary Festivals have seen us invite Y3s, Y5s and Y6s to join our students and hear the inspirational talks from authors such as Darren Simpson, Chris Bradford, Lewi Hancox, Simon Hames Green, Kimba.

As well as our annual Lit Fest we regularly invite authors to the College and we’ve been lucky enough to host Sir Lennie Henry, Dr Alex George, Cressida Cowell and many more.

Bedrock Vocabulary is an online vocabulary and reading curriculum that teaches students tricky tier 2 vocabulary within the context of aspirational fiction and non-fiction texts. It is an innovative approach to improving literacy skills. Using research-based strategies and an interactive multi-modal approach, Bedrock Vocabulary enables students to expand their academic vocabulary, whilst building their cultural capital with a wide range of topics from ‘Apartheid’ to ‘Weird World Records’.
