At The Hayling College, home learning is an important part of helping pupils become confident, independent and successful learners.
Home learning is designed to strengthen and extend the knowledge and skills taught in lessons. Through regular practice, retrieval and preparation, pupils have opportunities to revisit important learning, develop strong study habits and prepare for future lessons and assessments.
Our approach is based around four key purposes:
Practice • Retrieval • Preparation • Independence
We believe that the quality and purpose of home learning matter more than simply setting large quantities of work. Tasks should have a clear purpose, connect directly to classroom learning and be appropriate for the age and stage of the pupil.
Where will my child find their home learning?
Google Classroom is the central starting point for home learning at The Hayling College. Pupils should use their College Google account to check instructions, resources, deadlines and information from their teachers.
Teachers may set work directly through Google Classroom or direct pupils to one of our approved learning platforms. These include Sparx Maths, Sparx Science, Sparx Reader, GCSEPod and Languagenut, alongside other appropriate curriculum resources.
If a pupil is unable to access Google Classroom or one of the required platforms, they should speak to their tutor or class teacher so that we can help.
What do we expect from pupils?
We expect every pupil to complete their home learning to the best of their ability and by the deadline set.
At Key Stage 3, our focus is on establishing positive routines and good learning habits without overwhelming pupils. As pupils move into Key Stage 4, home learning increasingly includes independent revision, examination preparation and developing a 'little and often' approach to study.
We recognise that there will sometimes be genuine reasons why a pupil is unable to complete a task. Where there is a difficulty, we ask pupils or families to communicate with the relevant teacher as early as possible so that appropriate support can be put in place.
A home-learning detention will only be used where work remains incomplete after the deadline and there has been no prior communication explaining the difficulty.
Supporting every pupil
Technology, access to resources or a suitable place to work should not become a barrier to learning. If your child is experiencing difficulties with technology, workload, SEND or another circumstance affecting their ability to complete home learning, please contact us.
Printed copies can be provided where required, and we will work with pupils and families to consider appropriate support.
Families can support home learning by regularly checking Google Classroom with their child, helping them establish a manageable routine, encouraging reading and supporting short, frequent periods of retrieval and revision rather than last-minute cramming.
