Key Stage 4 Options

Choosing Your Pathway for Success

At The Hayling College, pupils begin the Key Stage 4 options process during Year 9. The choices made at this stage determine the subjects that pupils will study in Years 10 and 11, helping them to develop their interests, talents and future aspirations.

Throughout the options process, pupils are supported to make informed decisions about their next steps. We believe that choosing the right subjects is an important milestone, and therefore provide guidance from a range of staff to ensure every pupil selects a balanced and appropriate programme of study.

Supporting Pupils to Make Informed Choices

During Year 9, pupils will:

  • Explore the subjects available to study at Key Stage 4.
  • Receive advice and guidance from their tutorsubject teachers, and our careers team.
  • Learn about how different subjects can support future education, training and career pathways.
  • Discuss their strengths, interests and aspirations with staff who know them well.

This collaborative approach helps pupils to choose subjects that they will enjoy and succeed in while keeping future opportunities open.

Information for Parents and Carers

We recognise the important role that parents and carers play in supporting option choices. Each year, an Options Information Evening is held where senior leaders explain:

  • The options process and timeline.
  • The range of subjects available.
  • How choices can support future pathways.
  • Key dates for submitting option preferences.

Following the Information Evening, parents and pupils have the opportunity to attend subject-specific information sessions, where curriculum leaders and teachers provide detailed information about individual courses and what pupils can expect to study in Years 10 and 11.

This provides an opportunity for families to ask questions and gather the information needed to support their child through the process.

Making Choices

During the Spring Term, pupils select four option subjects that they would like to continue studying in Years 10 and 11.

These subjects are studied alongside the core curriculum, which all pupils continue to take:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE)
