At The Hayling College, our uniform helps create a sense of belonging, equality and pride in our College community. We want pupils to look smart and feel part of the College, while ensuring that what we ask families to provide is comfortable, practical and affordable.
Our approach reflects Department for Education guidance, which makes clear that the cost of uniform should not be a barrier to attending school or participating fully in school life. Schools should consider affordability, comfort, practicality, equality and value for money when setting their uniform requirements.
Keeping uniform affordable
We have deliberately kept the number of compulsory College-branded items to a minimum.
There are just two compulsory logoed items:
- Black College jumper with the school logo
- Royal blue and white College PE shirt
The remaining compulsory items are generic and can be purchased from a wide range of retailers, giving families greater choice over price, fit and comfort.
There is no expectation that families purchase optional branded items where an appropriate generic alternative is permitted. This approach is consistent with the DfE's statutory guidance, which requires schools to minimise branded items and give high priority to cost and value for money.
Comfort, inclusion and reasonable adjustments
Our uniform should enable pupils to learn, move around the College and participate comfortably throughout the school day.
We recognise that individual pupils may require reasonable adjustments because of disability, SEND, medical, sensory, religious or other needs. Parents and carers are encouraged to contact us if an aspect of the uniform is creating a significant difficulty for their child so that we can discuss an appropriate solution.
Our aim is to maintain clear and consistent expectations while ensuring that uniform requirements do not create unnecessary barriers to attendance, participation or inclusion. DfE guidance specifically recognises that schools have flexibility to make appropriate adjustments and should consider the effect of uniform requirements on attendance.
Pre-loved and second-hand uniform
We strongly encourage families to make use of pre-loved uniform. This helps reduce costs for families and is a more sustainable way of extending the life of good-quality clothing.
Second-hand Hayling College uniform is available through the pop-up uniform shop at Hayling Island Community Centre.
The College has previously publicised that the Community Centre holds donated pre-loved Hayling College uniform for families, including the option of arranging to view items privately.
The DfE requires schools to make second-hand uniform accessible and to clearly tell current and prospective parents where it can be obtained.
If the cost of uniform is causing difficulty, please contact the College. We would much rather work with a family to find a solution than allow uniform to become a barrier to a pupil attending or participating fully in College life.
Uniform requirements
- Tailored Black trousers (No black jeans, skinny trousers or leggings)
- Black tailored shorts (just above the knee)
- White polo shirt
- Plain sensible black shoes, black trainers are permitted if all black, no white soles. If worn, socks must be white or black.
- Black College jumper – round neck sweater with school logo
PE Kit
- Royal blue/white Hayling College long sleeved Rugby shirt – optional
- Royal blue/white Hayling College polo shirt
- Black loose shorts or skorts (not sweatshirt material and not close fitting)
- Training shoes and Football boots (as recommended by English School Football Association) – optional
- Shin pads and gum shield (as recommended by English Schools Football Association) – optional
- Embroidered PE black hooded sweatshirt (optional but recommended)
- Black tracksuit trousers or black leggings (optional and dependent on the activities – PE staff will direct if necessary)
- Black Waterproof jacket (optional)
Appearance
All pupils Appearance & Accessories:
- Hairstyles should be moderate and natural in their colour.
- Bags should be in dark colours – reflective strips recommended for safety purposes.
- Hair accessories must be plain black.
- Belts must be plain and black and no wider than 4cm/1.5inches with a plain, simple, functional buckle which is of a size appropriate to the belt width (No "fashion" belts).
- Earings must be studs.
- No facial piercings are permitted unless permission is requested from the Headteacher. However if a nose stud is agreed these must be clear silicon studs with a plaster whilst piercings are healing.
- Make-up, if worn, must be discreet and NOT include false eyelashes, lash extensions or false/acrylic nails. Nail varnish must be a natural pale colour or clear.
- Fashion Trainers or open toed shoes are not permitted.
- Footwear must be plain black.
- During PE and other practical activities all long hair must be tied back and any fringes that obscure vision must be clipped back.
- Religious Head Coverings should be plain black.
