Geography Curriculum
Our ambitious curriculum is designed to consolidate and extend pupils’ prior learning and experiences, to help prepare them for Post 16 opportunities and challenges in their lives. Geography does and will influence their daily lives.
Through The Hayling College mantra of ‘Happy, Healthy and High Performing’ our work aims to meet the needs of all pupils, and for them to gain geographical knowledge, understanding and transferable skills, by using a variety of inspiring and motivational teaching and learning styles, including discussion and written responses to case studies and topical issues.
The skills learnt include: communication; critical thinking; evaluative; problem solving; analytical; numerical; teamwork; organisational; data analysis research; presentation and map skills.
The following key concepts will be used to ensure geographical progression:
Sustainability – meeting the needs of people today, while not putting the needs of future generations at risk, and limiting harm to the environment.
Place – using locational knowledge to describe where the place is and describing what the place is like. This creates a sense of place.
Interdependence – how different things or people support and need each other.
Management – how things are dealt with or coped with.
Risk – The likelihood that a particular type of event will occur in a specific location
In turn, this will help pupils build confidence, resilience and deepen their knowledge to engender enquiring minds, creativity, critical thinkers and independent learners.
